Today marks the beginning of the 4th annual Northside Festival in Brooklyn. There are over 200 bands playing, so if you need some help deciding who to see, check out our Northside 2012 mixtape by clicking the photo above.
Suddenly Denmark is the world capital of punk music. Last year’s debut from Iceage was one of the year’s most earth-scorching records, and now we’re introduced to Lower, a tremendously exciting group with a single EP to its name. Enjoy “Craver,” and expect the EP to become available soon via Escho records.
All the DC touchstones are present on this track from Capital-City punks Imperial China: Rites of Spring, Fugazi, The Dismemberment Plan. Battles show their face as well, as do various Zach Hill project. This all makes for a track that is both engaging and fascinating, and one that should appeal to fans of punk and polyrhythm everywhere. The band’s third LP, How We Connect, is out now via Sockets Records.
Stream the new record from Black Hippy cohort Ab Soul above. These guys can’t miss.
The Avalanches haven’t released new music in 11 years. Could this be their new mixtape? Rumors abound. If they are back, I hope they let us keep our name. Click the photo to download.
I fall in love with Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek a little more every day.
From the fantastic new album by Zambri, which you should get.
New from Dirty Projectors: a demo that didn’t make their upcoming album Swing Lo, Magellan.
Oh indeed.
Thanks to Cursive and Cymbals Eat Guitars for covering this 90s sensitive-boy classic, “Hey Jealousy.”
Simultaneously lovely and amusing new track from Swedish duo jj, whose new LP is due in May via Secretly Canadian and Sincerely Yours. This would have fit in well on their Kills mixtape, which you can still download here.
Best Covers of 2012 post coming on the main site Monday. Preview! The more we hear from Twin Shadow the better.
