1. “As the darling of the music press this year so far, there’s likely not much we can say about this album that hasn’t been expressed in other publications. It’s loud, angry, young, emo, poppy, huge, short, awesome and produced by Steve Albini. The remarkable thing about this album, however, is the state it puts you in.”

Cloud Nothings’ Attack on Memory is our #1 Album of the Year (So Far). Click to read and hear all submissions, including Sharon Van Etten, Andrew Bird, Killer Mike and The Men.

  2. We caught The Young at The Hideout in Chicago last night. Despite a virtually empty bar, the Austin rockers turned it up to 11, giving equal flashes to great North American rock like Crazy Horse and Dinosaur Jr. Whoever is doing scouting for Matador Records is absolutely killing it. 6. All the DC touchstones are present on this track from Capital-City punks Imperial China: Rites of Spring, Fugazi, The Dismemberment Plan.  Battles show their face as well, as do various Zach Hill project.  This all makes for a track that is both engaging and fascinating, and one that should appeal to fans of punk and polyrhythm everywhere.  The band’s third LP, How We Connect, is out now via Sockets Records.

  7. 2012 will be remembered as the year that the best records resembled 1980s film soundtracks.  Already Chromatics, Night Jewel, Chairlift, Zambri, Trailer Trash Tracys and more have brought us fantastic film scores without films.  Now comes rising UK group Money with this fantastic new single, “So Long (GODISDEAD).”  Out on vinyl June 4 via Almost Musique.
