“There is a powerful, sinister quality to Ask the Dust, the newest release from Milwaukee-based electronic producer Lorn. The album has almost a transformational quality to it. I first listened to it in a Laundromat, as once innocent looking dryers morphed into cold and distant industrial machinery; a paunchy, shirtless man transforming from an eccentric curiosity into a symbol of hopelessness with whom I was suddenly unwilling to make eye contact. It was as though suddenly my laundry trip was directed by Christopher Nolan.”

“Released as summer days reached their longest, the album is a warm and inviting meditation on the season, and like summer, ends sooner than you’d hope. The firefly-flecked title track quivers with a day’s dying bird songs, cooling into what might be a field recording of several extremely relaxed musicians enjoying sweet tea on a porch at twilight. “From the moment you pull in to Fort Adams State Park, with its views of the Newport Harbor and the Narraganssett Bay, it’s clear that this is a special setting for a weekend of ‘folk’ music. While every performer at the Newport Folk Festival has some sort of traditional foundation, this year’s festival stretched the folk label to include such acts as My Morning Jacket and Alabama Shakes. To the conservatives this may seem like a step in the wrong direction, but the audience definitely skewed younger and more enthusiastic than at prior incarnations of the festival. Add to the wider scope of performers a brilliant layout that prevented stage noise crossover, and the beautiful setting, and you have all the necessary ingredients for a perfect festival.”
